Women's Equality Day falls on August 26, marking the day in 1920 when Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby certified the 19th Amendment, prohibiting states and the federal government from denying citizens the right to vote based on sex. Congresswoman Bella Abzug pushed to formalize the date, and Congress officially designated it Women's Equality Day in 1973 — though the amendment's promise took decades longer to reach all women, with Black women not able to vote without restriction until the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The day has always marked real progress and unfinished business — which is exactly the spirit behind this year's campaign.

At Wire HQ we pause every year on this day to measure how far we've come — and how much further there is to go. This year, Wire is doing that literally. Because the story of this community isn't just about mission. It's about momentum, and momentum shows up in numbers.

Here's where we stand.

The bigger picture first: women now represent nearly 47% of the total U.S. labor force, with approximately 79 million women participating in the workforce — the highest level on record. That's real progress. But progress isn't the same as parity. 

In 2026, women collectively earn 18% less than men based on how they're paid for the jobs they currently hold — a gap that has actually widened since 2024. And it's not just an entry-level problem: women in individual-contributor roles see the pay gap close, but once they reach manager or supervisor level, it widens again, and it widens further still at the executive level. In research specifically, a report by The Logit Group, via McKinsey found women hold only 25% of leadership roles — a field where, at the entry level, women are often the majority. 

That gap between "present" and "represented" is exactly the gap Wire exists to close.
